What did the RNID do for you?

I cant think of what this charity has done for us ,
Never knew of them till year 2000 so where have they been in all 30 years my life?
On website it reads
Changing the world for deaf and hard of hearing people. RNID (The Royal National Institute for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People) is the largest charity representing the 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK

So they represent 9 million deaf and hard of hearing well I find that hard to believe.
Before anyone mentioned minicom I have yet to meet any of my deaf friends using them. They came way to late.
I used it 5 times was to call the deaf centre as they are only ones answer to minicom.
Treid calling banks as they advertise that they use minicom they never answer or pick up the phone to speak and find it makes a lot of noise (like a fax) and put phone down. but seem to be more of a problem now due to data protection act they wont speak to third party. Don’t get me wrong the device is usefull for some people but what has the RNID done since then can we use Minicom on VOIP? I guess not .

Looking at a RNID website to what they are campaigning next .

Reduce hearing aid waiting times, MPs say - 18 May 2007
A group of MPs have said they want the Department of Health to tackle long waiting times for hearing aid services. The Health Select Committee says that half a million people are waiting for NHS audiology services, and some are waiting for more than two years.

A little misleading as they are talking about switching from analogue to Digital hearing aids.
Now I am the lucky few that have digital hearing aids but it took a little getting used to but sadly the build quality is rubbish. Depends on where you live moisture gets into it easily and I had to send back broken ones. They wont give me spare one so I go DEAF for a few weeks till its replaced.

Campaign for more subtitles on ITV digital channels
Subtitling levels on ITV digital channels are really low. ITV3 and ITV4 only subtitled 13.8 percent of their programmes in 2006 even though most of their programmes are repeats that were subtitled when first shown.

Support our campaign if you think deaf and hard of hearing people should be able to enjoy repeats of programmes such as Inspector Morse, Midsomer Murders, A Touch of Frost, Prime Suspect and Foyle’s War.

Take action! Send an email to Michael Grade (external link, opens new browser window), Executive Chairman of ITV, saying how important subtitles are to you….

Now bear in mind that

ITV2 launched on 7 December 1998

ITV3 launched on 1 November 2004

Why is RNID campaigning now? Whats taking so long for a charity that has £50,000,000 in the bank?

Excuse me what is RNID? I am afraid I am way behind and was never good at “initializing”, anyway.

A “charity”?? For the DEAF?? Hmm, that is something new to me. My apologies for appearing unknowledgable and unsophisticated. In always assumed that “SSI” was the only (popular) “charity” provided for the deaf.

    “Uncategorized Deaf”?

    @Lantana
I have edited it now there is a link to RNID .
I had to look up SSI and you got a good point there.
“Uncategorized Deaf”? … ooops its now under Deaf :-)

Do we need a charity where the staff does not do BSL (British Sign Language) in the office grounds?

What does the Royal National Institute for the deaf do for us in the UK ? basically it provides most of our access ! it is virtually the only national deaf support system there is with the ability. There are no BSL users in the UK at the RNID of note either, because they have rejected it in favour of the British Deaf Association which iwas/is near 100% sign based, and a charity too !

There are opposing views on the issue of BSL staff at the RNID. There is a need, for BSL users to come forward for JOBS there, but they don’t and haven’t the skills to run it. There is the MEMBERSHIP view of the charity that felt the BSL user fails to understand the ‘deaf and HI’ remit, and just wants a larger version of the BDA. An BSL using CEO was hired, then, fired for that reason.

The main issue apart from the determination OF BSL users NOT to go for jobs there, and the lack of corporate skills to do the job is the problem. There is a view if you are deaf and sign then that’s enough, as we know it isn’t, you just do not walk into any CEO job without any background, track record, CV or qualifications ANYWHERE.

Deaf can rightly claim, they aren’t being given the opportunity to gain these skills, and they should start at the UK’s number one support system, the RNID. It is NOT going to happen while BSL using deaf take the stance of ignoring the RNID altogether, it just lets hearing take all their jobs, we’ve no deaf at executive levels to be put forward, and the issue of a glaring LACK of understanding of 9 million impaired hearing people, is still going against them, they see BSL, they see culture, they see little else.

The BDA exists for them to support that, if that is what they want (a cultural-based supportive national group), but they have pulled out of that too. They are architects of their own isolation, and in real terms they are out because of it..

MM - why on earth have you launch a diatribe about Alkerism at RNID and Deaf’ staffing level? The topic is: “What did the RNID do for you?”……

In response to your comments - BDA may be in disarray at the moment but the grassroots are still there so what is needed is a strong visionary leader, with a good team behind it. BDA have been through lot of changes lately and need time to find their feet and get their fundraising strategies to be more robust. With money, you can start and do more things -plus can go further. I agree on your point that you cannot walk into an executive job without qualifications and experience but quite a lot of people knows that already so you can quit banging that drum.

Alker ? who ? I’ve done a blog just for you, and there’s a job in the offing too….

  6. Tony B on May 22nd, 2007

Fintan - hope you don’t mind me using this space to answer MM.

MM - I do empathise with your wife as I don’t understand you as well (re: SH board). I know what you are saying but I just don’t understand you. Words failed me whenever you do a yet another sledgehammer blog of confused witterings, presumptions and distortion. I just wish you are more succinct.

  7. MM on May 25th, 2007

Perhaps the issue is you not me, thought about it ? Perhaps using English is off putting ? Succinct, I’ll add that to my dictionary, mostly I stick to direct explanations, and describe issues in language that doesn’t need translation, I lack some tact I think someone said…

I myself is hard of hearing, i have “Recruitment” (basicially means everything i hear is garbled/unclear and i just cant make it out).

I enjoy watching TV… when its subtitled of course, and MILLION a time i have been shal we say P’eed off and disappointed due to a channel lacking the subtitles for a programe or film that i really wanted to see.

take Sci Fi channel or Paramount Comedy… - loads of shows on paramount especially i would love to see, but i can never enjoy it, why? no blinking subtitles.

so, not only i hope that this petition will suceed in getting ITV to boost up the percentages of programes being subtitled, i hope that maybe another petition might emerge to get the rest of the channels to do it… then i’ll be a happy man!!!

Talkin’ about the RNID they don’t seem to encourage the use of sign language interpreters, for deaf people who use BSL as a first language. Not sure why this is? Does anyone out there in the big wide world know the answer to this!!

    Cheers…

  10. Fintan on October 7th, 2007

    Thanks for your comment Maxine,
Your right they don’t and time and time again I hear of these people say exactly what you have said.

They are all hearing so what do you expect?
For years hearing people,be it parents , doctors and this charity think they know what’s best for us and sadly we let them :-(
